My path into software hasn’t been direct but I’m so glad to be working in the software sector now – there’s a real buzz about it. I’m a complete beginner but that’s exciting as there’s so much to learn. Having no student debt is a very nice benefit to doing an apprenticeship!
From quite early on, I knew that full-time university wasn’t for me. As I headed into sixth year , I had already talked to my parents about not wanting to go to full-time higher education option and was weighing up other possibilities. Workplus delivered a talk to sixth years, and the ‘earn and learn’ apprenticeship route resonated with me.
I feel like I’m always growing professionally and I’m able to look back, even now, and see how much I’ve grown in my apprenticeship so far. I’m so grateful for this apprenticeship and wouldn’t change it for the world! I’d encourage everyone to be open-minded but choose a pathway that is tailored to your strengths. We’ll all be working for a long time so it’s also important to enjoy what you’re doing!
I started the apprenticeship having 0 coding knowledge (and not liking it), but finished it developing my own code for my final project and enjoying the whole process
I’ve a clear career path set out for me, and am offered so much in terms of training and support. The managers take such an interest in me and the other apprentices. They really care about how the apprentices are developing, and offer support in so many different ways.
